Important Information about Antibody Testing (Cyrex and Vibrant America)

Identifying where your ‘Armed Forces’ are saying “you’ve got a problem” is the most accurate way of determining underlying insults that are triggering disease. The antibody tests offered on this site are the ‘tools’ to hear what your body is saying. But is your body capable of protecting you? Can it produce the antibodies you need? For more and more people every year, their immune system is incapable of producing the antibodies your body desperately needs to protect you. Either because of a genetic defect, an overwhelming amount of toxin exposure, or just by being plain ‘worn out’, your immune system may not be able to produce the antibodies you need. Thus, spending hundreds of dollars on these very valuable tests checking antibody loads may be a waste of dollars if your immune system doesn’t have the umph to produce them. It’s difficult to know who is likely to have an insufficient immune response and thus get ‘false negative’ results on an antibody panel, but here’s a few higher risk groups. If you have a history of more than 1 cold or flu per year, a history of more than 3 prescriptions for antibiotics in the last 10 years, a history of chronic fatigue, multiple chemical sensitivities, or a diagnosed autoimmune disease, it makes sense to first confirm your body is capable of producing appropriate amounts of antibodies before spending hundreds of dollars on the Cyrex antibody tests:

• If you have a history of more than 1 cold or flu per year
• A history of more than 3 prescriptions for antibiotics in the last 10 years
• A history of chronic fatigue, multiple chemical sensitivities, or a diagnosed autoimmune disease

It makes sense to first confirm that your body is capable of producing appropriate amounts of antibodies before spending hundreds of dollars on the Cyrex antibody tests.

TheDr.com recommends completing a Total Immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG, IgM) panel before ordering a Cyrex Array. This simple blood test can be ordered by your doctor or you can order it here: http://thedr.com/products-page-2/lab-tests/total-immunoglobulins-iga-igg-igm/

Once you receive your results, we recommend scheduling a 15-minute consultation with Michelle Ross, MA, MS, CNS, our director of clinical services. She can review your results and advise as to how to best proceed with testing. For more personalize recommendations, we recommend scheduling a New Client Consultation. This allows us to review and discuss your health history and symptoms and provide personalized testing recommendations.

I have personally trained Michelle in the advanced interpretation of the testing available on our website: http://thedr.com/products-page-2/lab-tests/. It is important to work with a healthcare practitioner who is specifically trained and knowledgeable about the research and principles behind this testing and can provide nuanced interpretations of the results. Michelle has an in-depth understanding of these functional test and what your results mean within “the bigger picture” of health.

My best to you,
Dr. Tom O’Bryan

Vibrant America IBSSure

We recommend starting with the Wheat Zoomer test or confirming immunoglobulin status prior to ordering this test. Please read the “Important Information about Antibody Testing (Cyrex and Vibrant America)” section above.

What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)?

IBS is a common disorder that affects the large intestine (colon) and commonly causes cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation. IBS, unlike inflammatory bowel disease, does not cause changes in bowel tissue or increase your risk of colorectal cancer.

IBS is a big issue in the world of gastroenterology. It is the most common GI disorder with worldwide prevalence rates ranging from 10-15%. There are between 2.4 and 3.5 million physician visits annually for IBS in the United States. Recent research has shown that up to 84% of those with IBS test positive for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).

SIBO is defined as the presence of excessive bacteria in the small intestine. SIBO is frequently implicated as the cause of chronic diarrhea, bloating, nutrient malabsorption, brain fog, anxiety, and intestinal permeability. Patients with SIBO may also suffer from unintentional weight loss or gain, nutritional deficiencies, food intolerances, and osteoporosis.

What is the Mechanism for SIBO Development?

CdtB toxins (cytolethal distending toxin B) are released by gastroenteritis causing bacteria against which antibodies are produced by the immune system. These antibodies interact with a protein called vinculin that is present in the intestinal cell-lining matrix. This interaction compromises the intestinal barrier leading to impaired digestive motility. This is key in SIBO development and recurrence.

Why Vibrant America?

Vibrant IBSSure™ may help to identify patients with IBS-D related SIBO. This blood test can reduce costs, reduce potential false-negatives associated with the current industry standard, the breath test, and assist with monitoring for SIBO recurrence.

How does IBSSure work?

One SST tube (serum tube) is collected and shipped to a CLIA and CAP accredited laboratory. Vibrant’s proprietary array of protein chips capture antibodies to CdtB and Vinculin using a chemiluminescent technology delivering high sensitivity and specificity of detection.

What does a Positive IBSSure mean?

If your result is positive, it is highly likely that you have IBS related SIBO. If IBSSure is inconclusive, you may benefit from the hydrogen/methane breath test. If you are taking steroids, anti-inflammatory medications, biologic agents, or any other immunosuppressive medications, you may not get an accurate reading of your antibody levels.

Your test includes a 15 minute Interpretation of your results with Michelle Ross, Director of Clinical Services. Please Note: The test interpretation consultation must take place within 3 months of placing the test order.

Vibrant Wellness Food Sensitivity Testing

Food sensitivities are responses to certain foods that occur hours to days after they are consumed. Abdominal pain, gas, bloating, nausea, eczema, joint pain, insomnia and swelling may be commonly associated symptoms. Chronic conditions/illnesses associated with food sensitivities include and are not limited to:

  • Digestive disorders
  • Migraines
  • Mood/attention deficit disorders
  • Weight gain
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Skin disorders
  • Obesity
  • Bronchitis and asthma symptoms
  • Autoimmunity
  • Intestinal Permeability (leaky gut)

Vibrant Wellness is the only company to utilize a chemiluminescent method of detecting food sensitivities on a silicon chip. This proprietary technology allows for the highest sensitivity of detection. Vibrant tests for IgG and IgA antibodies to food.  These are delayed sensitivities which can take up to 72 hours to appear.

  • IgG antibodies are the most common form of immunologic mediated food responses.  Most food sensitivity testing only include an IgG response.
  • IgA antibodies provide protection from mucosal damage. Elevated levels may indicate mucosal damage.
  • If IgG reactions are negative and you are still symptomatic, IgA reactivity may help provide answers.

This test identifies both IgG and IgA reactivity to 96 of the most commonly consumed foods including dairy, meat, seafood, fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, nightshades, and more.

Hydrogen/Methane breath test for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)

Glucose and lactulose breath test methods for assessing numerous health disorders

SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) is a condition in which abnormally large numbers of bacteria – the types that are normally found in the large intestine – are present in the small intestine. When not functioning properly, the migrating motor complex (MMC) fails to effectively sweep intestinal contents into the colon during periods of fasting. Once in the small intestine, these bacteria proliferate and feed off carbohydrates from food, creating fermentation gases, specifically methane and hydrogen. SIBO breath testing measures these gases.

SIBO can be a cause of many health problems, including diarrhea, abdominal pain, and protein/fat malabsorption. Common conditions associated with SIBO are nausea, flatulence, diarrhea, constipation, malnutrition, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Leaky Gut Syndrome, Acid Reflux, Rosacea, Fibromyalgia, GERD, etc.

To see if this is an issue for you, a hydrogen/methane breath test  can be done to assess your bacterial growth in the small intestine.

*Your test includes a 15 minute Interpretation of your results with Michelle Ross, Director of Clinical Services. Please Note: The test interpretation consultation must take place within 3 months of placing the test order.
Additional DescriptionMore Details

Hydrogen/Methane breath test is a reliable and convenient method to help in assessing and classifying dysbiosis and SIBO.

BioHealth provides high-quality SIBO testing services:

  • Non-invasive breath collection
  • Lactulose and Glucose challenge
  • Lactulosechallenge to detect bacterial overgrowth in the distal small intestine
  • Glucose challenge for higher specificity in the upper small intestine
  • 3-hour collection method reveals SIBO in patients with slow transit times

What does This SIBO Breath Test Measure?

Hydrogen – Bacteria produce hydrogen through the process of fermentation of unabsorbed carbohydrates. A small amount of hydrogen is normally produced from limited amounts of unabsorbed carbohydrate reaching the colon. However, large amounts of hydrogen may be produced if there is malabsorption of carbohydrates and/or bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, allowing a larger amount of hydrogen to reach the colon. The hydrogen produced by the bacteria is absorbed through the wall of the small and large intestines. The hydrogen-containing blood travels to the lungs, where the hydrogen is released and exhaled in the breath. Elevated hydrogen levels tend to be associated with IBS-D (diarrhea) and faster transit times.

Methane – About 15 percent to 30 percent of people have gut flora that contain Methanobrevibacter smithii, which converts four atoms of hydrogen into one molecule of methane. These subjects may not exhale much hydrogen in the breath test despite having SIBO or carbohydrate malabsorption, as excess hydrogen produced as a result of fermentation is converted into methane. Elevated methane levels tend to be associated with IBS-C (constipation) and slower transit times. Both hydrogen and methane are produced by bacteria and are not a normal product of human metabolism. Too much hydrogen, methane or both is a positive test for bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine.

MRT® Blood Test for Food Sensitivities and LEAP

Mediator Release Testing, MRT®, is a functional measurement of immunological pathways activated by food and food chemicals in the diet. It measures the inflammatory response and subtle changes in our immune cells (lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, and eosinophils) as they release chemical mediators (a substance released from cells, e.g., cytokines, histamine, leukotrienes, prostaglandins, etc.), that regulate or cause physiologic consequences during an immune response to an antigen. It’s the release of these chemical mediators that leads to the negative clinical effects a person with a food sensitivity experiences.

The measurement of these chemical mediators is obtained after a food or food-chemical exposure and calculates these changes as either “non-reactive,” “moderately-reactive,” or “reactive,” based on the level of inflammation induced from the exposure. The immune mediator release, which brings about inflammation, is the key event that leads to negative symptoms.

*Your test includes a 30 minute Interpretation of your results with Michelle Ross, Director of Clinical Services. Please Note: The test interpretation consultation must take place within 3 months of placing the test order.
Orders accepted from United States only.
Additional DescriptionMore Details

Millions of Americans suffer from food sensitivities that can contribute to inflammation, pain and various symptoms that can drastically reduce their quality of life. Without question, food sensitivities and allergic reactions to foods and food chemicals are on the rise making diagnostic testing an important way to identify adverse immunological responses to various foods and chemicals. Traditional medical tests are often not able to identify sensitivities and only look for full blown allergic (IgE) responses.

Adverse immune reactions to foods contribute to chronic conditions such as autoimmune issues, IBS and IBD, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, lupus, GERD or acid reflux, sinusitis, asthma, autism, ADD, etc. Research shows that the following symptoms can also be triggered by food sensitivities: weight gain or loss, anxiety, depression, brain fog, lack of focus and/or concentration, digestive disorders such as chronic diarrhea, migraines, joint and muscle pain, skin conditions, fatigue, insomnia, slow wound healing and an inability to recover effectively from exercise, etc.

It can take time for our immune system to respond and we may not feel the effects of a reactive food for up to 72 hours after ingestion. The fact that a person may not feel symptoms for hours, or even days, after ingestion, makes it more difficult for a connection to be made (e.g., a headache felt today and the pizza eaten two days ago). A specific food can elicit a very different response for each individual. A strawberry can cause a skin breakout for one person and not another. Any person can develop a sensitivity to any food, even foods considered to be nourishing and healthy. Sometimes a “reactive” food (e.g., dairy) can be easy to identify. Unfortunately, a chemical like solanine, found in nightshades like tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, eggplant and even spices, may not be so easy to pinpoint.

The adult MRT® panel consists of 123 foods and 27 food additives commonly found in the American diet. The single factor that all food sensitivities and all food-induced immune reactions have in common is the proinflammatory and proalgesic (related to or causing pain) mediator release from white cells. MRT® aims to measure the levels of inflammation. Additionally, there are seven different possible types of immune reactions to foods; meaning that a problematic food or food chemical can activate the immune system in one of seven different ways. MRT® accounts for all seven types of food sensitivity reactions. Even the most popular food sensitivity blood test available, the ELISA IgG, can only detect one out of the seven different types of reactions.
Research shows that:

  • MRT® is able to distinguish between symptomatic and asymptomatic populations
  • MRT® correlates with inflammation and symptoms
  • Diets based on MRT® show significant symptom reduction
  • MRT® has excellent real-world reproducibility

The LEAP Eating Plan is a personalized nutritional plan based on your MRT® results. Not only does MRT® give insight into inflammation provoking foods and food chemicals, but more importantly MRT® identifies your BEST foods – the foods that form the basis of your LEAP Eating Plan. Simply put, MRT® gives you information you can’t get any other way, and that information directly translates into a targeted nutrition plan that is personalized to meet your needs.

The goal of the LEAP Eating Plan is to address food sensitivities and help you achieve the maximum outcomes in the shortest period of time. For many people, following a personalized LEAP Eating Plan has shown significant symptom reduction.

In the past an elimination diet by trial and error was required to figure out which foods were causing symptoms. Fortunately, a LEAP Eating Plan can help you quickly overcome even the most troublesome food sensitivity related issues.

Doctor’s Data Comprehensive Stool Analysis with Parasitology x3 (days)

Gastrointestinal (GI) complaints are among the most common reasons that patients seek medical care.   Symptoms associated with GI disorders include persistent diarrhea, constipation, bloating, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome and malabsorption.  The Comprehensive Stool Analysis with Parasitology x3 (days) is an invaluable non-invasive diagnostic assessment that permits an objective way to evaluate the status of beneficial and imbalanced commensal bacteria including Clostridium species, pathogenic bacteria, yeast/fungus and parasites.

*Your test includes a 30 minute Interpretation of your results with Michelle Ross, Director of Clinical Services. Please Note: The test interpretation consultation must take place within 3 months of placing the test order.

(Price includes collection kit and second day FedEx return shipping for US orders)  There is a $55 additional drop ship charge on all International orders.  These tests are not available in Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Russia or Ukraine.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Gastrointestinal (GI) complaints are among the most common reasons that patients seek medical care.   Symptoms associated with GI disorders include persistent diarrhea, constipation, bloating, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome and malabsorption.   The Comprehensive Stool Analysis with Parasitology x3 may be used to assess digestive and absorptive functions, the presence of opportunistic pathogens and to monitor the efficacy of therapeutic remediation of GI disorders. Precise identification of pathogenic species and susceptibility testing greatly facilitates selection of the most appropriate pharmaceutical or natural treatment agent(s). Important information regarding the efficiency of digestion and absorption can be gleaned from the measurement of the fecal levels of elastase (pancreatic exocrine sufficiency), muscle and vegetable fibers, carbohydrates, and steatocrit (% total fat). Inflammation can significantly increase intestinal permeability and compromise assimilation of nutrients.   The extent of inflammation, whether caused by pathogens or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), can be assessed and monitored by examination of the levels of biomarkers such as lysozyme, lactoferrin, white blood cells and mucus.  These markers can be used to differentiate between inflammation associated with potentially life threatening inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which requires life long treatment, and less severe inflammation that can be associated with the presence of enteroinvasive pathogens.   Lactoferrin is only markedly elevated prior to and during the active phases of IBD, but not with IBS. Monitoring fecal lactoferrin levels in patients with IBD can therefore facilitate timely treatment of IBD, and the test can be ordered separately.   Since the vast majority of secretory IgA (sIgA) is normally present in the GI tract where it prevents binding of pathogens and antigens to the mucosal membrane, it is essential to know the status of sIgA in the gut.   sIgA is the only bona fide marker of humoral immune status in the GI tract. Cornerstones of good health include proper digestion of food, assimilation of nutrients, exclusion of pathogens and timely elimination of waste.   To obtain benefits from food that is consumed, nutrients must be appropriately digested and then efficiently absorbed into portal circulation.   Microbes, larger sized particles of fiber, and undigested foodstuffs should remain within the intestinal lumen.   Poor digestion and malabsorption of vital nutrients can contribute to degenerative diseases, compromised immune status, and nutritional deficiencies.   Impairment of the highly specific nutrient uptake processes, or compromised GI barrier function (as in “leaky gut syndrome”) can result from a number of causes including:   low gastric acid production, chronic maldigestion, food allergen impact on bowel absorptive surfaces, bacterial overgrowth or imbalances (dysbiosis); pathogenic bacteria, yeast or parasites and related toxic irritants, and the use of NSAID’s and antibiotics.   Impairment of intestinal functions can contribute to the development of food allergies, systemic illnesses, autoimmune disease, and toxic overload from substances that are usually kept in the confines of the bowel for elimination. Efficient remediation of GI dysfunctions incorporates a comprehensive guided approach that should include consideration of elimination of pathogens and exposure to irritants, supplementation of hydrochloric acid, pancreatic enzymes and pre- and probiotics, and repair of the mucosal barrier. IMPORTANT INFORMATION – Please read and follow the below instructions. Doctor’s Data Comprehensive Stool Analysis with Parasitology x3 Instructions Follow all directions included in the test kit.  On day 3, you must induce diarrhea and collect a purged stool sample.  Parasites live in the intestinal lining and not in the stool, so sampling only the last few inches of stool often misses them.  Submitting a purged sample increases detection of parasites by forcing them out of the bowel lining. Purging involves drinking a laxative to induce diarrhea. Some laxatives may interfere with parasite morphology.  Use one of the following products for inducing diarrhea.

  • Fleets Phospho-Soda – purchase from your local pharmacy.  If Fleets Phospho-Soda is unavailable, speak to a pharmacist about what product is recommended for a “purged stool sample”.
  • Magnesium citrate – the product is called Natural Calm [http://www.calmnatural.com/natural-calm-16oz] and can be purchased online or at a Natural Foods Store.
    • Take 30g of the Natural Calm powder.  Stir it into water and drink.
    • Take the night before collecting the day 3 sample, or in the morning on day 3,
½ – 1 hour before breakfast. Important Instructions:
  • You need a thorough bowel movement – it needs to run like water.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Do not use castor oil or salt water to induce diarrhea.
Collect the first watery bowel movement once diarrhea has been induced.  This provides a much better opportunity to test positive for these hard to find parasites.

Follow-up Doctor’s Data Comprehensive Stool Analysis without Parasitology

Please note: the Comprehensive Stool Analysis Test is only recommended as a follow-up test to the Comprehensive Stool Analysis Test with Parasitology x 3 and should only be ordered at the recommendation of your healthcare practitioner. We recommend that the initial test should always be Doctor’s Data Comprehensive Stool Analysis Test with Parasitology x 3.

Gastrointestinal complaints are among the most common reasons that patients seek medical care. Symptoms associated with GI disorders include persistent diarrhea, constipation, bloating, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome and malabsorption. The Comprehensive Stool Analysis can help assess digestive and absorptive functions, the presence of opportunistic pathogens and to monitor the efficacy of therapeutic remediation of GI disorders. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing to prescriptive and natural agents is also performed for appropriate bacterial and fungal species at no additional charge.

To obtain benefits from food that is consumed, nutrients must be appropriately digested and then efficiently absorbed into portal circulation. Microbes, larger-sized particles of fiber, and undigested foodstuffs should remain within the intestinal lumen. Poor digestion and malabsorption of vital nutrients can contribute to degenerative diseases, compromised immune status and nutritional deficiencies. Impairment of the highly specific nutrient uptake processes, or compromised GI barrier function, as in “leaky gut syndrome,” can result from a number of causes including: • Low gastric acid production • Chronic maldigestion • Food allergen impact on bowel absorptive surfaces • Bacterial overgrowth or imbalances (dysbiosis) • Pathogenic bacteria, yeast or parasites and related toxic irritants • The use of NSAIDs and antibiotics Impairment of intestinal functions can contribute to the development of food allergies, systemic illnesses, autoimmune disease, and toxic overload from substances that are usually kept in the confines of the bowel for elimination. The Comprehensive Stool Analysis does not include analysis for parasites. For assessment of the presence for parasites, consider the Comprehensive Stool Analysis with Parasitology.

GI Pathogen Profile, multiplex PCR

Viruses, parasites, and bacteria—now you can receive 22 results with 1 test.

Overlapping symptoms—compounded by the lack of testing methods that could identify a full range of viruses, parasites, and bacteria—have historically made GI infections difficult to diagnose. The GI Pathogen Profile, an FDA-cleared molecular test, uses the FilmArray multiplex PCR system to identify 22 viruses, parasites, and bacteria with up to 98.5% overall sensitivity and 99.3% overall specificity.

This test is useful for: chronic or acute diarrhea, bloody stool, travelers diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever & vomiting, compromised immune system, and other chronic diseases (heart disease, aortic grafts, diabetes, chronic renal diseases).

Get to diagnosis—and targeted treatment—faster.

Use the GI Pathogen Profile as a stand-alone test, or as a complement to our Comprehensive Stool Analysis, to test for the presence of viral infections or to differentiate between possible diarrheagenic strains of E. coli.

*Your test includes a 15 minute Interpretation of your results with Michelle Ross, Director of Clinical Services. Please Note: The test interpretation consultation must take place within 3 months of placing the test order.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Detailed Information The GI Pathogen Profile, using the FilmArray multiplex PCR system, tests for 22 Viruses, parasites, and bacteria, and offers new opportunities for the rapid, accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment of diarrheal illnesses which can improve patient outcomes and clinical success. While bacteria and parasites are the primary cause of food & water-borne diarrheal illness (48 million infections/year), the vast majority of acute diarrheal illness is caused not by bacteria or parasites, but by viral infections. In fact, Norovirus is the primary gastrointestinal infection occurring in the United States. Even though testing for pathogenic bacteria and parasite is commonly available, there has been limited availability of viral testing until recently. Acute gastroenteritis may contribute to patient morbidity and even mortality, if the illness progresses to severe dehydration. Also, the identification of reportable diseases is imperative to prevent large outbreaks, especially for highly contagious or food-borne illnesses, and many gastrointestinal illnesses have very similar clinical presentations. If your patient has diarrheal illness, you need accurate results quickly. Most GI Pathogen Profile results can be provided within one business day of sample receipt with up to 98.5% overall sensitivity and 99.3% overall specificity. As a result, you can begin targeted treatment immediately, for greater therapeutic efficacy and reduced risk of complications & side effects associated with incorrect treatment or unwarranted antimicrobial administration. Rapid diagnosis allows for better treatment decisions, as antimicrobial agents have no effect on viral illness, and the indiscriminate use of antibiotics may increase bacterial resistance. Certain pathogenic bacterial and parasitic infections may require antimicrobial treatment, while other infections warrant rehydration and supportive therapies. Knowing the difference allows the treating physician to practice good antimicrobial stewardship. Use the GI Pathogen Profile as a stand-alone test, or as a complement to our Comprehensive Stool Analysis, to test for the presence of viral infections or to differentiate between possible diarrheagenic strains of E. coli.

Total Immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG, IgM)

When measuring antibodies to identify an immune reaction, one important factor is to determine IF the immunoglobulin mechanism is working adequately in your body. It often may not.

A total Immunoglobulin (IgG, IgA and IgM) Test can be done to measure the level of each category of immunoglobulins. Cyrex Array #5 measures an Immunoglobulin response attacking our own tissue (an auto-immune mechanism). Remember when the ‘Big Guns’ of your immune system are called into action, there are different branches that may respond (e.g., Total IgA for Marines, Total IgG for the Army, Total IgM for the Air Force, etc.). When we test to see if one of the Branches has been called out (e.g., an IgA response) we make the assumption the “Marines” are well-funded and well-equipped to respond.

Immunoglobulin deficiency means that you are not producing adequate levels of antibodies to that branch of the “Armed Forces”. If the “Marines” have been deployed to many different locations at the same time, if they’ve been overtaxed and underfunded, their numbers may not be adequate to respond to the stress (the invader). Thus a test of the Marines (e.g., Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies IgA on Array 5) may come back negative due to immunodeficiency or immunosuppression. There is a problem, but the immune system cannot identify it or respond appropriately.

To see if this is an issue for you, a Total Immunoglobulins Panel can be done to measure your immune response.

theDR.com has our own portal at Utla Lab.
You will be purchasing your test directly from Ulta Lab

**This order does not include a test interpretation. If you would like a test interpretation, you can schedule a consultation with our Director of Clinical Services, Michelle Ross. We recommend a 30-minute appointment.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

We recommend this panel to anyone concerned about: • the competence of their immunoglobulin response mechanism, “Is it compromised, suppressed, or just plain ‘worn out’?” • their immunoglobulin production. • their Cyrex panel results due to multiple antibody markers that are below normal (e.g., <0.5). • confirming that Cyrex test results are not showing a ‘false negative’ due to poor immunoglobulin response capabilities. Any of the above could interfere with the accuracy of Cyrex test results identifying the state of your immune response. Total immunoglobulin testing can help to identify immunodeficiency and/or immunosuppression. A person can be born with an immunodeficiency or acquire it through: infection repeated antibiotic use steroid use (including steroid inhalers) disease malnutrition burns long-term, low-level demands increased immunoglobulin response as a side effect of different pharmaceuticals that can suppress the immune system An immunodeficiency could cause your test results to be inaccurate, giving a false negative. If you are concerned that you may not be producing adequate levels of antibodies, we recommend that you order this test before ordering your Cyrex Array/s. Or if your Cyrex results have come back and you just don’t believe the negative test results, a Total Immunoglobulin test for IgA, IgG and IgM will tell you if your immune system is responding normally or not.

Cyrex Array 2: Intestinal Antigenic Permeability Screen

Important: Before ordering this test, please read the above, “Important Information about Cyrex Antibody Testing”

A test that identifies how gluten is robbing you of gut health.

Gluten causes inflammation in the gut, which can eventually lead to intestinal permeability, or “leaky gut.” Leaky gut allows undigested food particles, bacteria, and other pathogens to escape into the bloodstream where they can trigger allergies, sensitivities, and inflammation in other parts of the body.  This test pinpoints which of these is causing leaky gut so your practitioner knows what to specifically target for faster and more efficient gut repair.

Array 2 is an antibody assessment of the intestinal barrier integrity and bacterial endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides), tight-junction proteins (occludin, zonulin) and cell cytoskeleton (actomyosin) and identifies both transcellular (through the cells) and paracellular (between the cells) routes of intestinal barrier penetration (leaky gut) by large molecules with a capacity to challenge the immune system. This is a main reason why people come back sensitive to many foods.  Several different mechanisms cause leaky gut:
  • Breakdown of cells
  • Loosening of the junctures of the gut lining
  • Bacterial infection
This test pinpoints which of these is causing leaky gut so your practitioner knows what to specifically target for faster and more efficient gut repair.

Cyrex Array 3: Wheat/Gluten Proteome Sensitivity and Autoimmunity

Important: Before ordering this test, please read the above, “Important Information about Cyrex Antibody Testing”

More than one wheat protein can cause Gluten Sensitivity – Cyrex Labs tests for multiple peptides of gluten

Being Gluten Sensitive isn’t as black-and-white as once thought.  Actually, gluten is a misnomer – “gliadin” is the portion of wheat that triggers an immune response in people (since “gluten” is commonly used I will stick with that term).  It also has been discovered that wheat is made up of more than 100 different components that can cause a reaction, not just one (gliadin).

More than one wheat protein can cause Gluten Sensitivity – Cyrex Labs tests for multiple peptides of gluten. Until now testing for Gluten Sensitivity has only been against one of those components, alpha gliadin. Through extensive research Cyrex pinpointed the twelve components of wheat that most often provoke an immune response. This new test greatly expands the parameters of gluten sensitivity testing, catching those who may have previously tested negative because they don’t react to the alpha gliadin. A ‘false negative’ occurs when the test results says a condition is not present, when in reality there is a problem.  Many forms of standard testing for celiac disease or gluten sensitivity do not include the right markers or enough of the right markers.  Using Cyrex Array 3 allows for more accurate results with fewer ‘false negatives’. Opioid testing Array 3 screens for antibodies to the opioids produced from wheat called Gluteomorphins and Prodynorphins.  Gluten can have a drug-like opiate effect on an individual.  Antibodies to gluteomorphin and prodynorphin can indicate that gluten is affecting your brain.  Some people have enzymes in their digestive tract that break gluten down into opioids that act like heroin or morphine.  Embarking on a gluten-free diet can cause terrible withdrawal symptoms in these people.  One practitioner tells of a patient whose withdrawal symptoms were so severe she went to the emergency room. Another problem with opioids is they disrupt brain function by attaching to receptor sites normally meant for neurotransmitters.  Neurotransmitters are brain chemicals that help dictate our personality, moods, behavior, bodily function, and more. This opioid effect on neurotransmitter receptors explains why gluten plays a role in so many cases of ADD/ADHD, autism, or behavioral problems in children; or brain fog, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, anorexia and migraines in adults.  When one mother put her autistic son on a gluten-free diet, he began eating the binding out of books as he was so desperate for his gluten-opioid “fix.” Lectins Array 3 also includes testing for antibodies to the wheat lectin Wheat Germ Agglutinin (WGA).  WGAs are lectins or carbohydrate-binding proteins with a capacity to bind to many cells and tissue antigens.  Lectins can bind to cells involved in the immune system and induce toxic damage, inflammation and autoimmunity. Enzymes Array 3 includes testing for antibodies to enzymes:  Tissue Transglutaminases -2, -3 and -6 and Gliadin-Tranglutaminase Complex.  Transglutaminases are a family of enzymes that form protein polymers, like scaffolding, which are vital in the formation of barriers and stable structures such as gut tissue.  Antibodies may appear in serum before the clinical onset of symptoms. Gliadin-Transglutaminase IgG can assist with diagnosing Celiac Disease. Tissue Transglutaminase-2 (tTG2) is commonly recognized for being an effective diagnostic test for celiac disease.  Transglutaminase is an enzyme in the digestive tract targeted in an autoimmune attack triggered by gluten. tTG2 antibodies indicate gluten is attacking gut tissue through an autoimmune attack. Tissue Transglutaminase-3 (tTG3) is express mainly in the epidermis (skin disorders) and to a lesser extent in the placenta and the brain. Tissue Transglutaminase-6 (tTG6) is expressed in neural tissue.  tTG6 may be involved in the pathogenesis of gluten reactivity-related neurological dysfunction.

Cyrex Array 4: Gluten-Associated Sensitivity and Cross-Reactive Foods

Important: Before ordering this test, please read the above, “Important Information about Cyrex Antibody Testing”

In cross-reactivity, the body may mistake another food for gluten and react accordingly.  Array 4 tests for 24 different foods that may be causing cross-reactivity or are newly introduced to the diet or over-consumed favorites.

One of the most frustrating scenarios for both the practitioner and the patient is when a gluten-free diet fails to have any effect on a person who seems so clearly gluten sensitive. Newer research shows this may be due to cross-reactivity.

Cyrex Array 5: Multiple Autoimmune Reactivity Screen

Important: Before ordering this test, please read the above, “Important Information about Cyrex Antibody Testing”

Which parts of the body are affected by a gluten-sensitivity?

People typically shrug off the possibility of gluten sensitivity by saying, “I don’t have any digestive problems.” Little do they know that gluten produces digestive symptoms in only a minority of people (1 out of 8). For the majority, gluten can damage the brain, the heart, the skin, the respiratory tract or the joints. Cyrex Array 5 can be useful for Patients who:

  • Have been diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder, as they commonly develop additional autoimmune conditions
  • With chronic increased intestinal permeability, which is the gateway for environmentally-induced autoimmune disorders.

The Cyrex Array 5 is an economical and effective way to assess possible tissue damage to multiple organs of the body and will help you assess predictive antibodies. Elevated numbers of antibodies, known as Predictive Antibodies, are measurable up to ten years before the clinical onset of the disease. Identification of pathogenesis at this stage allows for the possible arrest or even reversal of disease progression. Array 5 – Systemic Autoimmune Reactivity Screen™ looks at multiple tissues commonly targeted by auto-antibodies, including Cardiovascular, Endocrine, Joint, Gastrointestinal and more.

Array 20: Blood Brain Barrier Permeability

Important: Before ordering this test, please read the above, “Important Information about Cyrex Antibody Testing”

Blood Brain Barrier Permeability

The blood brain barrier (BBB) is a physical barrier formed by the arrangement of endothelial cells and tight junctions that line the capillaries which supply blood to the brain. It is a highly selective barrier that restricts the movement of molecules from the blood across to the brain. The BBB naturally permits the passage of essential metabolites, small hydrophobic (lipid soluble) molecules like oxygen, carbon dioxide, hormones, etc. Acting like a filter, the BBB prevents the entry of infectious agents, toxins and other environmental triggers into the nervous system.

Barrier Protein IgG + IgA combined ( CPT CODE : 83516 )
Blood Brain Barrier Protein IgM ( CPT CODE : 83516-59 )
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
When the BBB is inflamed, the tight junctions open and produce a condition called increased BBB permeability or increasingly referred to as “leaky brain” (not the same as leaky brain syndrome). Xenobiotics, viruses, bacterial toxins and other molecules greater than 400 daltons in size, which are normally excluded, can penetrate the BBB. Penetration of the BBB by very large molecules such as LPS or even intact viruses may first cause neuroinflammation, followed by neuroautoimmunity with peripheral or central nervous system (CNS) symptoms.
Disruption of brain barrier results first in the release of BBB proteins and then in the formation of IgG, IgM or IgA antibodies against tight junctions and BBB proteins. Production of these antibodies against the BBB and other neural cell antigens from a cell-mediated and humoral immune response may indicate a pathological alteration of the protective brain barrier. Continued opening of the BBB and the persistent release of autoantigens for an extended period in adulthood may cause neuronal cell death and an early cognitive decline. Repeated head trauma and traumatic brain injury (TBI) associated with accidents and some sports, such as football or hockey, have also been shown to damage the BBB and the astrocytes.

Array 22: Irritable Bowel/SIBO Screen

Important: Before ordering this test, please read the above, “Important Information about Cyrex Antibody Testing”

A blood test that identifies the overgrowth of large intestinal bacteria in the small intestine and the release of bacterial cytotoxins.

This blood test evaluates a breach of intestinal barrier by bacterial cytotoxins and their entry into circulation. It is designed to assist in setting guidelines for treatment of irritable bowels/SIBO and reduce risk of igniting the autoimmune process.

This test is recommend for people who:

  • Have irritable bowels

  • Exhibit symptoms of malabsorption, including weight loss, anemia or fatty stools

  • Have associated conditions such as fatigue, reflux, skin disorders, obesity or food intolerances

  • For people who prefer a blood test rather than the breath test.

Functional Blood Chemistry Panel

What is a blood chemistry panel?

A blood chemistry analysis (i.e.: a blood test) provides key information about one’s health within various systems of the body, and as a whole. It allows a healthcare provider to assess the degree of health or disease in a patient, and to screen and identify imbalances in physiological metabolism and function. A blood chemistry analysis is the most efficient, effective, and affordable general screening test available. Blood chemistry results can be evaluated using either conventional or functional laboratory ranges. The prevention of disease and whether a developing health condition in its initial (“subclinical”) stage is discovered depends significantly on whether a healthcare practitioner uses the conventional or functional laboratory ranges to interpret a person’s blood test results.

ALCAT Celiac, IBS, and Crohn’s Array (CICA): Genetic Testing Only Cheek

Cheek Swab Collection Kit

HLA typing for celiac disease: HLA-DQ2.5 and HLA-DQ8; Genetic Markers for Crohn’s: ATG16L1 and NOD2

Strong evidence shows that in order to develop celiac disease, a person must have one or both of two genotypes known as HLA-DQ2.5 and HLA-DQ8. More than 95% of patients with celiac disease have at least one of the two genetics. Most celiac patients (more than 90%) carry the DQ2 genetic.

Crohn’s disease is triggered by a variety of environmental and genetic factors. It is described as a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) caused by a dysregulation of the immune response to intestinal flora and in parallel, accompanied by a defect of the epithelial barrier. The predominant genetic markers are:

  • NOD2/CARD15 associated with the innate immune system and the activation of nuclear factor кB (NF- кB).
  • T300A mutation in the ATG16L1 gene increases its susceptibility to degradation by Caspase 3 and thus is associated with autophagy.
